This was a weekend of environmental awareness and protest on Perranporth Beach, with two different events taking place. Saturday saw the Recycled Surf Board Art Installation take shape, while on Sunday a Human Chain was formed in peaceful protest at pollution of the ocean.   Recycled Surf Board Art Installation ~ Saturday the 8th of October 2022 Volunteers in Perranporth collected old and broken surf boards from the beach this summer, with the aim of recycling them. Two hundred and sixty seven and a half boards were collected from the beach, or placed into specially provided recycling bins by visitors. Close to the Devon and Cornwall border, high on a hill, sit a copse of beech trees that have become iconic to those travelling past. Each year, at some point between mid-June to early July, the fields on the West Pentire Headland, erupt into numerous shades of red and yellow as the poppy and corn marigold fields flower. In early June you will often see vast purple fields across Cornwall. People often assume this is lavender but it is actually phacelia, a cover crop plant native to the USA and Central America. Phacelia is an environmentally friendly plant because it is fast growing, and provides food for bees and other insects. It also absorbs nitrogen, so when the farmer ploughs the plant back into the field it acts as a natural fertilizer. Chapel Rock, with its flag pole and hidden swimming pool, is one of the most iconic and distinctive features of Perranporth beach and the North Coast of Cornwall. Chapel Rock is so called because it allegedly used to have a chapel on top of it. In the photograph below, showing Chapel Rock behind Union Seine boats, there appears to be both steps going up the side of the rock, and the remains of a building on top of it. The other thing to note is just how big the rock is in this picture compared to the size it is today. I was lucky enough to be able to capture a photograph of a solar halo over Perranporth, on Thursday the 5th of May, 2022. Also known as a 22 degree halo, this kind of solar halo is a rare atmospheric optical phenomenon caused by sunlight passing through ice crystals in the upper atmosphere. Walking through the dunes I noticed that the light seemed strange. I was wearing my polarising sunglasses and so was able to look up directly at the sun.
